Dear International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board,
My name is Abiy Seifu, an ordinary Ethiopian currently living in the capital Addis Ababa. Of all the global competitive sports Olympic games in general and athletics in particular are my favorite. The last couple of weeks the whole world was breathing with one lung, seeing with one pair of eyes and chanting the same song - London was our heartbeat. In Olympic I see sport exceeding our differences, I see men and women meeting and exceeding their capacities, I see cultural exchanges among the diverse populations of countries throughout the world, I see music and poems and fun in the air, I see how much we have in common than any difference one can struggle to find among us. There is hope in this game, there is peace, respect and love. Thank you for the dreamers of the 19th century now the world gets together to have fun and love at least once in four years.
Whilst I enjoy the Olympic games as much as one can enjoy any exciting game my excitement is interrupted whenever I watch games that involve physical fighting between individuals. I never enjoyed any kind of competition that involve any type of fighting between human beings, boxing, wrestling or whatever type of sport that involves physical fighting between individuals or groups. If there is one gene we have to delete from our DNA I think it is the one that leads to fighting between human beings. Olympic, as the game of love and fun should not be promoter of these kinds of 'sports'. Children in all corners of the world grow watching the Olympic games and our legacy to the next generation should be one that foster love and respect between them. We should not show them how to defeat a fellow human being in any type of fighting, the hug the fighters show at the end of the games can not be excuse for this. I trust these kinds of sports should be dropped from the Olympic games. I am happy Golf is added to the Olympic games, that is fantastic! In the face of fast degrading environment we all dream to have beautiful green fields in our neighborhoods and there is no better sport competition than Golf to portrait this. I would be happy to see more sport competition that promote environmental protection and reduce climate change, I know a lot of the competition that are already in the Olympic games promote this but I love to see more which could show how we can preserve our planet in peril. I don't want to see any kind of games that involve any type of fighting between human beings. With this letter I ask the IOC to drop all games that involve fighting between human beings.
We are civilized. We have learnt a lot from our fathers and forefathers. At this point in time we should be able to differentiate between what is good and what is bad for our children and grand children. History will judge us not only by what we have achieved in terms technology development and materials we produced but also by how much we developed in our spirit. The world should be welcoming and better place for all human beings to live. We shouldn't in any way encourage fighting between human beings whatsoever as this may be literally interpreted among many children and a lot of other adults in some part of the world and could eventually let their fighting gene take over them. As an individual living in this part of the world we understand the consequence of fighting between human beings which can break at any level.
PLEASE DROP THESE SPORTS FROM THE GREAT OLYMPIC GAMES!
Thank you for your understanding!
Abiy Seifu
