Ethiopia and Cambridge Industries agree to construct Africa's first waste to energy facility in Addis Ababa

Cambridge Industries and the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) have signed a contract for the construction of a 50 MW waste to energy plant in Addis Ababa.

The plant, which will be first its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa, will cost an estimated $120 million to construct.

Cambridge Industries is conducting detailed feasibility studies throughout Ethiopia to recommend future projects in various cities including Dire Dawa, Adama, Mekelle, Gonder, Behar Dar, Hawasa, and Jimma.

According to the company both effective power generation and waste management are among the principal challenges faced throughout Africa, particularly in its rapidly urbanizing cities.
