Ethnic clash in Kenya leaves several dead

Several people have died in attack in Kenya that was believed to be motivated by revenge for the killing of more than 100 villagers earlier this year, reports The BBC. Others speculate the clash that left at leas thirteen children and six women died due to political aids. Kenyan elections are due in March 2013.

The attack by ethnic Pokomo farmers on an Orma village, Kipao, came in the early hours of the morning. Police say that there have been casualties on both sides. Houses were reportedly burnt and villagers cut down with machetes. 150 Pokomo raiders attacked Kipao village, which is inhabited by the Ormas, early on Friday. The Ormas appeared to have been aware and were prepared. The raiders used firearms, spears, machetes and arrows.

At least 30 dead and 30 others seriously wounded, including a one-year-old child. More than 40 houses were set ablaze.

Settled Pokomo farmers and semi-nomadic Orma pastoralists have clashed intermittently for years over access to grazing, farmland and water in the coastal region.
