FIFA opens disciplinary proceedings against Ethiopia

FIFA can confirm that disciplinary proceedings have been opened against three member associations for each having allegedly fielded an ineligible player in the preliminary competition for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™.

The Ethiopian Football Association allegedly fielded an ineligible player in the match between Botswana and Ethiopia on 8 June 2013.

The disciplinary proceedings against the three associations relate to article 55 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and article 8 of the Regulations for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil.

Article 55 FIFA Disciplinary Code (Ineligibility)

1. If a player takes part in an official match despite being ineligible, his team will be sanctioned by forfeiting the match (cf. art. 31) and paying a minimum fi ne of CHF 6,000.

2. If a player takes part in a friendly match despite being ineligible, his team will be sanctioned by forfeiting the match and paying a minimum fine of CHF 4,000.

Article 8 of Regulations for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil (Eligibility of Players)

  1. Each association shall ensure the following when selecting its representative team for the FIFA World Cup:
    1. All players shall hold nationality of its country and be subject to its jurisdiction;
    2. All players shall be eligible for selection in accordance with the FIFA Statutes, the Regulations Governing the Application of the Statutes and other relevant FIFA rules and regulations.
  2. Protesting regarding the eligibility of players shall be decided by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee in accordance with the FIFA Disciplinary Code
  3. The associations shall be responsible for fielding only eligible players. Failure to do so shall lead to the consequences stipulated in FIFA Disciplinary Code
