To fight HIV/AIDS women should shave-off their hair, take fewer showers and dress shabby, Zimbabwean politician

How do we fight the spread of HIV/AIDS? Of course, taking preventive measures, timely test, therapy, medication, the list goes on. Proper education and awareness of the public about the diseases is crucial in preventing the spread of the diseases. HIV/AIDS remain one the world’s deadliest death. This grim reality could not have been more pronounced in Africa than else where in the world. The continent bears the burden of the AIDS pandemic, with more than 60% of the world’s patients live in Africa. In this regard well defined and clear health policy and guidance by African government are critical.

That being what is expected under normal conditions, there is bizarre suggestion to battle HIV/AIDS put forward by Zimbabwean politician. According to MDC-T Zimbabwean Senator by the name Morgan Femai, in order to win the fight against HIV/AIDS woman must bath occasionally, shave-off their hair, dress shabbily and get circumcised to make them less attractive to men.

The senator emphasize that, this prescription was necessary to help curb the spread of HIV/AIDS because men were finding it difficult to resist attractive and well-dressed women.

While addressing a Zimbabwe parliamentary HIV awareness workshop, he proposed that the government should come up with a law that compels women to have their heads clean-shaven like what the Apostolic sects do. In addition, the senator recommends women should also not bath and get circumcised as these are what have caused the spread of HIV. Even though it is not obvious how the Zimbabwean politician has arrived at this bizarre recommendation,  the whole drama highlights the daunting challenge the  fighting of HIV/AIDS poses in that continent. Lack of proper information, near abscens of medication and now confused and bizarre policy have made the fight of HIV/AIDS in Africa very difficult.

Mr. Femai didn't stop there, but he went on with his lecture, by saying women have got more moisture in their organs as compared to men, so there is need to research how to deal with that moisture because it is conducive for bacteria breeding. There should be a way to suck out that moisture. It is really sad to say the least to see and hear such kind of nonsense from people who were supposed to provide a clarity in policy and guideline in fighting the disease.
