The Guardian is reporting about looming health crisis in parts of Africa because of an influx of counterfeit medicine from countries in Asia. Expert points to China and India as source of the majority of dangerous medications in Africa. But while India has stepped up oversight, China is only now just catching on.
Malaria is one of the diseases affected due to fake and substandard drugs that come through porous borders in Africa coupled with lack of oversight in countries like China.
For example, as many as one-third of malaria drugs in Uganda and Tanzania are fake or substandard, the Guardian continues.
Apart from the lives lost, there are additional concerns about drug resistance building in east Africa due to these activities.
However, according to Xinhua, Chinese Foreign Ministry officials refute those accusations as unfounded and cooperation between the Chinese government and African countries has played an important role in improving the healthcare environment for people in Africa.
Officials stressed China’s willingness to work with Africa to deepen medical and health cooperation in order to benefit people in that continent.
